Everything you need to know about the JJ stent
The JJ stent, also known as the double J ureteral stent, is a small flexible plastic tube that urologists place inside the ureter (the duct that carries urine from the kidney to the bladder). It has a “J” shape at both ends, which prevents it from moving and allows the urinary tract to remain open in situations where there is a risk of obstruction.
What is the JJ stent used for?
In daily urological practice, the JJ stent is a very common tool. It is used in cases such as:
Kidney or ureteral stones: when they block the flow of urine or cause infections.
After urological surgery: to ensure proper drainage during recovery.
Ureteral strictures: to keep the duct open.
Tumors or inflammation that compress the ureter and impair its function.
How is it placed?
The JJ stent is placed using a cystoscopy and/or ureteroscopy, endoscopic techniques that usually require anesthesia. It is a safe procedure, and in many cases the patient can return home the same day or the next.
At Arzoz Urologia, we always explain the procedure, aftercare, and approximate time the stent will need to remain in place in a personalized way.
What discomfort can it cause?
Although the JJ stent is very useful, it may cause some temporary discomfort:
Increased frequency of urination.
Small urine leakage or presence of blood in the urine.
Pain or pressure in the side or back, especially when urinating.
These symptoms are usually temporary and, if necessary, can be controlled with medication.
How long should it stay in place?
The duration depends on the reason for placement: it can be a few days, weeks, or even months.
The most important thing is not to forget the JJ stent. If it remains for too long, it may cause complications. That is why we carry out scheduled follow-up and notify the patient when it should be removed or replaced.
When to seek urgent medical attention?
Contact your urologist immediately if you experience:
- High fever.
Severe, persistent pain.
Difficulty urinating.
Heavy bleeding in the urine.
